Mount Everest Summits: Climbers Reach New Milestones
Mount Everest witnessed history in the making this weekend, with two climbers achieving remarkable feats.
Kami Rita Sherpa Claims New Everest Summit Record
Kami Rita Sherpa, a Nepali sherpa, secured the record for the most summits of Mount Everest, surpassing his own previous record. This incredible achievement marks his 29th time reaching the peak.
A seasoned guide for over two decades, Kami Rita first conquered Everest in 1994 and has maintained a near-annual ascent ever since. His latest accomplishment coincides with the kick-off of the Everest climbing season, with a surge of climbers expected in the coming weeks.

Kami Rita reached the summit, which stands at a staggering 8,849 meters (29,000 feet), at around 7:30 am local time on Sunday.
He previously announced his pursuit of a record-breaking 29th summit through an Instagram post from Everest base camp, stating, "One man's job, another man/woman's dream."
While Sherpa has often described his climbs as work, his competitive spirit was evident last year when he embarked on two expeditions to reclaim the record from his fellow countryman and longtime rival, Pasang Dawa Sherpa.
Kenton Cool Notches 18th Everest Summit
Local authorities confirmed that Kenton Cool, a British mountaineering guide from Gloucestershire, also reached the summit on Sunday.
Despite his impressive achievement of 18 Everest summits, Cool has remained humble about his accomplishments.
In a 2022 interview with AFP news agency, he acknowledged the greater number of ascents accomplished by Sherpas.
Women Climbers Making Strides on Everest
Lhakpa Sherpa holds the distinction of most Everest summits by a woman, having successfully scaled the peak for the 10th time in 2022 through crowdfunding support.
Climbing Season on Everest Sees Increase in Permits
Nepal's government issued approximately 400 climbing permits for this year's spring season, which runs from April to June. With most climbers accompanied by local guides, the total number of individuals expected to summit Everest this season is around 800.
While last year saw over 600 summits, it was also a tragically deadly season with 18 recorded fatalities on the mountain.
