Mounting gambling debts led him to devise a plan to steal from Ohtani. Prosecutors allege Mizuhara used Ohtani's password to access his bank account without the player's knowledge or consent.
Elaborate Scheme in Shohei Ohtani Interpreter Fraud
Shohei Ohtani interpreter fraud went beyond a simple unauthorized transfer. Officials say Mizuhara changed the contact information on Ohtani's account, ensuring bank personnel would contact him for verification of wire transfers.
He even impersonated Ohtani over the phone on multiple occasions to authorize transfers, including a $500,000 transfer to a bookmaker associate in June 2023.
Fraudulent Activity Extended Beyond Bank Transfers
The Shohei Ohtani interpreter fraud wasn't limited to unauthorized bank transfers. In September 2023, Ohtani agreed to cover $60,000 in dental work with a check. However, Mizuhara used Ohtani's debit card for the payment and kept the check money for himself.
Federal authorities also revealed that Mizuhara diverted $325,000 from Ohtani's account in 2024 to purchase baseball cards, intending to resell them for profit.
