Scheffler Arrested Following Alleged Incident with Police Officer
In the early hours of Friday outside Valhalla Golf Club, Scottie Scheffler was arrested and handcuffed for allegedly not complying with police instructions during an investigation into a pedestrian fatality.
John Mills, 69, who was working for a PGA Championship vendor, tragically died after being struck by a shuttle bus. Scheffler, attempting to reach the golf course amidst halted traffic, was involved in the incident.
He was charged with four offenses, including second-degree assault of a police officer, as his vehicle purportedly dragged an officer to the ground.
Scheffler Finishes PGA Championship Despite Off-Course Ordeal
Despite the ordeal, Scheffler managed to finish the PGA Championship tied for eighth place at 13 under, following a strong performance with a 65 in Sunday's final round.
Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler admitted to feeling notably fatigued but expressed pride in his resilience throughout the week. Scheffler admitted that the full impact of his arrest didn't sink in until later on Friday night.
Following his booking and release from a downtown detention center, he managed to eat a small meal of eggs and bacon before his second round, during which he scored a 5-under 66.
Police Officer Claims Injuries After Encounter with Scheffler
Detective Bryan Gillis claims that he stopped Scheffler's SUV near the golf course and tried to communicate instructions to him. According to Gillis, the SUV accelerated, dragging him and causing injuries to his left wrist and knee.
A spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department informed ESPN on Saturday that Gillis did not activate his bodycam during the encounter.
The upcoming arraignment delay on June 3rd will be a key date to watch as the legal proceedings for Scottie Scheffler's arraignment unfold.
