Music Labels Sue AI Companies for Copyright Infringement
Major record labels are firing legal shots at artificial intelligence (AI) companies in a battle over copyrighted music.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced on Monday that music giants like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group have filed lawsuits against Suno and Udio, accusing them of using copyrighted music to train their AI systems without permission.

The lawsuits allege that Suno and Udio's AI programs used a vast amount of copyrighted material from various artists and genres, including iconic tracks like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," to train their AI for music generation.

The RIAA CEO, Mitch Glazier, emphasized the music industry's openness to AI collaboration but stressed the need for responsible development.
"We welcome AI and collaborate with developers to create sustainable AI tools that prioritize human creativity and empower artists," Glazier said.
However, he condemned unlicensed services like Suno and Udio that exploit artists' work for their own gain without compensation.
Lawsuits Seek to Block Unauthorized Use and Compensation for Damages
Filed in Massachusetts and New York, the lawsuits demand that Suno and Udio acknowledge their unauthorized use of copyrighted music. The record labels are also seeking court orders to prevent future access to their music libraries and financial compensation for copyright infringement.
As of now, neither Suno nor Udio has responded to requests for comment.
Music Industry Takes a Stand Against Unlicensed AI Use
These lawsuits follow Sony Music's recent warning to over 700 AI developers in May. The music company supports artists using new technologies for creative expression but remains firm on protecting their work from unauthorized use by AI platforms.
