Oakland Convenience Store Destroyed in Mass Looting, Owner Blames Police Response

A California mini-mart robbery has left the owner devastated and calling for the city to take responsibility. Sam Mardaie, owner of the 76 gas station on Hegenberger Road in Oakland, reported that a large group of people ransacked his store on Friday, causing significant damage and stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and cash.

Mardaie alleges the looters, estimated at 80 to 100 people, arrived in waves over a 30-40 minute period. They reportedly took advantage of a large sideshow happening near the store and smashed their way into the mini-mart, which was only offering window service due to the early hour.

"Everything is destroyed. This is how I support my family," Mardaie said, expressing his heartbreak at the destruction.

According to Mardaie, the looters not only stole merchandise but also took the cash register and ATM, containing an estimated $22,000. They also vandalized the store, destroying anything they couldn't steal.

California Mini-Mart Robbery: Dispute Over Police Response

Mardaie's anger extends to the Oakland Police Department's response time. He claims his employees called 911 during the robbery, but officers didn't arrive for nine hours.

The Oakland Police Department disputes this account, stating they received the call after the thieves had already fled. They categorize the incident as a lower priority due to other active calls.

"Whatever excuse they give me isn't enough. I can't accept it," Mardaie countered, frustrated by the lack of immediate response.
