Putin stated that they were nearing the development of what he termed "cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation."

Advancements in Cancer Vaccines and Treatments

Several countries and companies are actively pursuing cancer vaccines. Last year, the UK government partnered with Germany-based BioNTech to initiate clinical trials for "personalized cancer treatments," to reach 10,000 patients by 2030.

Pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck & Co are also working on an experimental cancer vaccine.

A mid-stage study demonstrated that this vaccine halved the chance of melanoma recurrence or death after three years of treatment, marking a significant advancement in combating the deadliest form of skin cancer.

According to the World Health Organization, there are presently six licensed vaccines targeting human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are linked to several cancers including cervical cancer.

Additionally, vaccines against hepatitis B (HBV) are available, reducing the risk of liver cancer.

Russia’s Sputnik V Vaccine: COVID-19 Response

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia created its own Sputnik V vaccine for COVID-19 and distributed it to several nations.

However, within Russia, there was significant public hesitancy towards vaccination. Putin personally stated that he had received the Sputnik vaccine to reassure the public about its effectiveness and safety.

According to the WHO, lung cancer topped the list as the most frequently diagnosed cancer globally, with 2.5 million new cases making up 12.4% of the total new cases.
