According to a statement released to Entertainment Weekly by the Colorado State Patrol, Ben Potter's cause of death was a single-vehicle car crash. The accident occurred at 9:19 a.m. on I-25 near Fort Collins.

“The Windsor resident was southbound on I-25 at mile marker 267.5 when his silver Toyota 4Runner veered off the right shoulder of the interstate,” the statement detailed about Ben Potter's cause of death. “He then crossed the frontage road running alongside the interstate and his vehicle rolled over several times.”
No Impairment or Excessive Speed Suspected in Ben Potter’s Cause of Death
The investigation into Ben Potter's cause of death is ongoing, but authorities do not believe impairment or excessive speed were factors in the accident.
Ben Potter was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
