BMW and Jaguar Used Banned Parts, Report Alleges
A new report by the US Senate Finance Committee has uncovered a concerning issue within the auto industry.
The investigation revealed that major car manufacturers BMW and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), along with Volkswagen (VW), unknowingly used components from a Chinese supplier banned due to alleged ties to forced labor.
Report Details Banned Parts Found in BMW and Jaguar Vehicles
The report, compiled by staff under Senate Finance Committee chairman Ron Wyden, exposes how nearly 8,000 BMW Mini Cooper vehicles imported to the US contained parts manufactured by Sichuan Jingweida Technology Group (JWD).

This Chinese company was blacklisted by the US government in December 2023 due to suspicion of involvement in forced labor practices.
Senator Wyden Calls for Action After BMW and Jaguar Used Banned China Parts
Senator Wyden, a Democrat, heavily criticized the automakers' self-regulatory efforts, emphasizing their inadequacy in preventing the use of parts potentially linked to human rights abuses.
"BMW and Jaguar's self-policing is clearly not doing the job," Wyden stressed. The report urges US Customs and Border Protection to strengthen enforcement and hold companies accountable for their role in potentially supporting forced labor within China's supply chain.
BMW and Jaguar Remain Silent on Banned China Parts Controversy
While Jaguar Land Rover responded to BBC inquiries by reiterating their commitment to human rights and fighting slavery in their supply chains, they did not provide any specific comments on the situation involving the banned parts from China.
Both BMW and Jaguar have yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the use of these parts.
JLR Takes Action on Inventory Containing Banned China Parts
The report further highlights that JLR also imported spare parts containing JWD components after the company was placed on the US blacklist.
JLR has since confirmed that they have identified and are actively disposing of any remaining inventory worldwide containing these parts.
Volkswagen Previously Faced Issues with Forced Labor
This is not the first time an automaker has encountered problems related to forced labor.
In February of this year, Volkswagen disclosed that US authorities had seized thousands of their vehicles, including Porsches and Bentleys, due to a component linked to violations of US anti-forced labor laws.
The report acknowledges that Volkswagen proactively reported the issue to customs officials.
Context: The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA)
The controversy surrounding BMW and Jaguar's use of banned China parts stems from the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), enacted by the US Congress in 2021.
This legislation aims to curb the import of goods originating from China's Xinjiang region, where Uyghur Muslims are believed to be subjected to forced labor.
JWD's inclusion on the UFLPA Entity List in December 2023 indicates a high likelihood that their products are linked to forced labor.
