Denver Broncos Strategy For Quarterback with Zach Wilson Trade
The Denver Broncos' decision-makers have repeatedly underscored their deliberate approach to managing the quarterback position.
This stance was affirmed through their actions: releasing Russell Wilson after only two years, refraining from participating in the quarterback frenzy during free agency, and again during a pre-draft media briefing by coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton.

Broncos Acquire Zach Wilson in Strategic Move
Recently, the team clarified its strategy by acquiring Zach Wilson from the New York Jets. Despite his challenges over three seasons with the Jets, including a 57% completion rate and more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23), Denver sees Wilson as a potential reclamation project under new coaching.
The trade, which only involved a swap of a sixth-round pick for a seventh-round pick, is a low-risk maneuver providing the Broncos with additional options come draft day.
Broncos’ Draft Dilemma: To Pick or Not to Pick a QB
The trade also reflects the awkward position Denver faces in the upcoming draft. Competing with several other quarterback-needy teams, the Broncos have limited leverage due to not having a first-round pick since 2021, the year they traded for Russell Wilson.
With projections suggesting up to four quarterbacks might be taken before Denver's 12th pick, the Broncos must decide if they should use their pick on potentially the fifth quarterback in the draft line-up.
Open Strategy and the Need for Impact Players
Coach Payton has expressed openness to exploring all possibilities with the 12th pick, emphasizing the need for the right fit rather than a forced choice.
“You'd think we absolutely need to draft a quarterback, yet it has to be the right one, the right fit," Payton explained, highlighting the draft's inherent unpredictability.
GM George Paton also emphasized the need to avoid desperation. “What you don't want to do is force it," Paton said, suggesting that a hasty decision could leave the team in a similar bind in the future.
The Broncos aim to make their first pick count by selecting an impact player, irrespective of position.
A Tumultuous Decade and a Fresh Hope
The Broncos have faced a tumultuous period, missing the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons with five different head coaches and twelve different starting quarterbacks. Currently, only two of their own first-round picks are on the roster cornerback Pat Surtain II and tackle Garett Bolles underlining a dire need for standout players across various positions.
Zach Wilson’s Arrival: A Precautionary Measure
While Zach Wilson's arrival does not rule out the possibility of Denver drafting another quarterback, it does provide the Broncos with some insurance as they navigate what could be a chaotic first round.
His addition is a strategic move that offers flexibility and, perhaps, a bit of a safety net for a team keen on rebuilding effectively.
