Couple Faces Charges After Dine and Dash Sprees

Bernard McDonagh, 41, and his wife Ann McDonagh, 39, from Sandfields, Port Talbot, pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to charges related to their dine and dash sprees. The couple's actions came to light after CCTV footage of them leaving a Swansea restaurant without paying their bill went viral last month.

The investigation revealed that the McDonaghs' dine and dash activities stretched from August 2023 to April 2024. In total, they managed to avoid paying over £1,168.10 across five different restaurants.

In addition to the restaurant charges, Ann McDonagh also admitted to shoplifting from two supermarkets and obstructing a police officer.

Restaurants Targeted by Dine and Dash Couple

The couple's dine and dash spree targeted restaurants across South Wales. These included:

  • Bella Ciao in Swansea (unpaid bill: £329)
  • Isabella's in Porthcawl
  • River House in Swansea Docks
  • Golden Fortune in Port Talbot
  • La Casona in Skewen

The owners of Bella Ciao, a newly opened restaurant, described the incident as "deeply distressing." The couple had ordered expensive T-bone steaks and double portions of dessert before leaving without paying their £329 bill.

Justice Served for Dine and Dash Couple

Following the couple's guilty pleas, the restaurant manager at Bella Ciao expressed satisfaction with the outcome. They also mentioned receiving messages of support from people around the world. A spokesperson for River House echoed this sentiment, stating they were glad to see the couple held accountable for their actions.

The court proceedings revealed that the McDonaghs have a history of theft and fraud, with previous convictions on their records. Despite this, they were granted bail while awaiting sentencing scheduled for May 29th at Swansea Crown Court.

This case serves as a reminder of the seriousness of dine and dash offenses. Restaurants, particularly smaller establishments, can suffer significant financial losses from such behavior.
