Ground Beef Recall Due to E. Coli Contamination

The US Department of Agriculture issued a recall on Wednesday for more than 16,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible contamination with E. coli bacteria.

Cargill Meat Solutions initiated the recall for ground beef packages bearing the establishment ID "EST. 86P," which were produced between April 26 and 27.

These packages, lacking the Cargill brand on their primary packaging, were distributed to Walmart stores nationwide. No instances of illness related to the recalled beef have been reported, according to the USDA.

Individuals who have purchased the affected packages are urged to either dispose of them or return them to the store where purchased. Anyone experiencing symptoms of E. coli poisoning should seek medical assistance promptly.

The strain of E. coli detected in the recalled beef, O157:H7, prompted a public health alert following its discovery in Greater Omaha Packing Co. beef packages last month. The FDA and CDC announced on Tuesday that they were investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli potentially linked to organic walnuts sold in food co-ops or natural food stores.

What is E. coli? What are the symptoms?

Most Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria are typically harmless inhabitants of the intestines in both humans and animals. However, certain strains can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses ranging from mild to severe or even life-threatening if ingested, as reported by the CDC.

The types of E. coli responsible for causing diarrhea are commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water, or through contact with feces from infected individuals or animals. For example, inadequate hand hygiene by food handlers after using the restroom can contribute to the spread of infection. Additionally, animals like cattle can transmit E. coli to food and agricultural products.

E. coli infections typically manifest with symptoms such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, lasting approximately five to seven days. Symptoms usually appear three to four days after exposure to the bacteria, according to the CDC.
