Harris Attacks Trump: A Fierce Campaign Kickoff

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has launched her White House campaign with an assertive speech against former President Donald Trump, framing the upcoming November election as a pivotal choice between her, a former prosecutor, and Trump, a convicted felon.

Harris Rallies Support in Wisconsin

Addressing around 3,000 supporters in Wisconsin, a crucial swing state, Harris compared Trump to the fraudsters she has prosecuted. "I took on perpetrators of all kinds,” she declared. “Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers.

Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain.” She continued, "So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump's type. In this campaign, I promise you, I will proudly put my record against his any day of the week."

In response, Trump criticized her border policies and called her "Lyin' Kamala Harris" on social media, claiming she ruins everything she touches.

Biden Endorses Harris

This rally came just a day after Harris secured majority support from Democratic delegates, solidifying her path to becoming the party’s nominee.

On Sunday afternoon, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race and endorsed Harris.

Biden had been facing increasing pressure from prominent Democrats and donors after his poor performance in a June debate against Trump.

Fundraising and Polls

Harris’s campaign saw a massive fundraising boost, collecting over $100 million (£77 million) within 36 hours of Biden's exit. A new national poll by Reuters and Ipsos shows Harris leading Trump by two points, 44% to 42%.

Observers noted that the enthusiasm of Harris's audience was notably higher than that at Biden's events this election cycle. When Donald Trump's name was mentioned, many in the audience chanted "lock him up," mirroring the chant from Trump’s 2016 rallies against Hillary Clinton.

Trump's Social Media Counterattacks

Trump, meanwhile, took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to highlight a poll indicating that Ms. Harris is the most unpopular vice-president in US history.

He also shared a post from GovTrack, a non-partisan congressional scorekeeper, noting she was ranked as one of the most left-wing Democratic senators during her tenure.

Harris's Policy Priorities

In her speech, Ms. Harris outlined several liberal priorities, including gun control, abortion access, child poverty, union rights, and affordable healthcare.

"Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?" she asked.
