Extradition Battle: Weinstein Opposes California’s Request
Weinstein remains in New York custody as the court determines whether he will be retried there or sent to California to serve his sentence. During the brief hearing, Weinstein contested California's extradition request.
His lawyer, Diana Fabi Samson, argued that California must present a warrant signed by the governor before they can proceed with extradition. Her primary concern is ensuring Weinstein receives proper medical attention while in New York custody.
Medical Attention and Legal Battles
Weinstein was hospitalized after experiencing chest pains upon his transfer to Rikers Island jail in late April.
However, he was returned to jail after it was discovered he received special treatment, including a private room. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 7th.
A History of Charges and Sentencing
In 2023, Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles for attacking an Italian model and actor during a 2013 film festival. This conviction resulted in a 16-year prison sentence. The victim bravely spoke out in court about the assault's lasting impact, detailing her loss of happiness, confidence, and faith.
She emphasized that no sentence could truly compensate for the damage inflicted.
Weinstein's Los Angeles sentence was initially on hold while he served time in New York for convictions stemming from the 2020 rape and assault trial involving two women. He received a 23-year sentence for these crimes.
However, last month, a major development unfolded when the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction due to concerns about the judge's decisions during the trial.
The legal saga continues for Harvey Weinstein as he awaits the court's decision on his extradition and potential retrial.
