Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins Announces New Novel “Sunrise on the Reaping”

Fans rejoice! Suzanne Collins is returning to the dystopian world of Panem with a brand new novel titled Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

This highly anticipated fifth installment in the popular Hunger Games saga is set for release on March 18, 2025.

Hunger Games: A New Dawn with a Familiar Threat

Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes readers back 24 years before the events of the original novel, thrusting them into the terrifying reality of the reaping for the Fiftieth Hunger Games.

This prequel also serves as a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, released in 2020, placing the story 40 years after the events of that novel.

Lionsgate wasted no time in capitalizing on the excitement, announcing a film adaptation of Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping hitting theaters on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence, who directed all but the first Hunger Games film, will return to helm this upcoming project.

Hunger Games: A Legacy of Success

The initial four Hunger Games books captivated readers worldwide, selling over 100 million copies and garnering translations into numerous languages.

After the release of Mockingjay in 2010, many believed the series had concluded.

However, Collins surprised fans in 2019 with the announcement of a new Hunger Games project, later revealed to be The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Hunger Games: Inspired by History, Tackling Modern Issues

For her Hunger Games series, Collins drew inspiration from Greek mythology and Roman gladiator games. Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes a different approach, with Scottish Enlightenment thinker David Hume serving as a key influence.

Collins herself explains, "With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was influenced by David Hume’s concept of implicit submission and his observation of ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’”

This concept fuels the novel's exploration of propaganda and the power wielded by those who control the narrative. "The question ‘Real or not real?’ feels increasingly relevant to me every day," Collins added in her statement.

Hunger Games: A Franchise that Endures

The Hunger Games film franchise has been a massive success for Lionsgate, generating billions of dollars in revenue. Jennifer Lawrence's iconic portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games," "Catching Fire," and the two-part "Mockingjay" captivated audiences.

The films also featured a star-studded cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Josh Hutcherson, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland.

Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson expressed his continued enthusiasm for the collaboration, praising Suzanne Collins as "a master storyteller and our creative north star. We are incredibly fortunate to collaborate with someone whose talent and imagination are so consistently outstanding."

With the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes film last year and a stage adaptation premiering in London this fall, the Hunger Games franchise proves it remains a powerful force in the entertainment world.
