Wactor's talent and character were remembered by his agent, David Shaul. "Johnny Wactor was a diligent worker and an outstanding individual," Shaul told Variety. "Having been together for over ten years, his absence will leave a lasting void in our hearts."

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) provided details about the incident, though they did not disclose the identity of the deceased. According to the LAPD, around 3:25 a.m. on Sunday, Wactor encountered three individuals stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle near Pico Boulevard and Hope Street, in downtown Los Angeles.
One of the suspects fired a gun, striking Wactor, who was later pronounced dead.

Scarlett Wactor described the events leading up to the shooting. Her son had been working at a nearby rooftop venue and was walking to his car with co-workers after closing.
When they reached his car, which was jacked up, he initially thought it was being towed. He approached the situation and was shot.
