Josef Newgarden Wins Indianapolis 500 in Dramatic
Josef Newgarden wins a challenging season and emerged victorious in the Indianapolis 500, achieving a historic back-to-back win and solidifying his place in racing history.
Newgarden Edges Out O’Ward in Thrilling Finish
Newgarden, the Tennessean driver, stole the show on the final lap, overtaking Pato O'Ward to claim the checkered flag. This victory marks the first time a driver has won consecutive Indy 500s since Helio Castroneves' feat in 2001 and 2002, under the legendary Team Penske.

Staying true to his celebratory tradition, Newgarden parked his Chevrolet on the track and exuberantly climbed through the fence to join the cheering crowd in the grandstands. "I love this crowd," he exclaimed. "I always have to go into the crowd if we win here; I always do that!"
O'Ward, visibly disappointed, slumped over his steering wheel after falling short of becoming the first Mexican driver to win the Indy 500 in its 108-year history.
Redemption After Cheating Scandal
This win holds particular significance for Newgarden, as it serves as a comeback story following a season-opening disqualification in March. Team Penske was penalized for using illegal push-to-pass software, granting their cars an unfair advantage.
Newgarden himself utilized this extra power during the race. The scandal unfolded over several weeks, with IndyCar meticulously investigating the manipulation.
Team owner Roger Penske, who holds a multifaceted role overseeing IndyCar, the Indy 500, and the speedway itself, responded with suspensions for four crew members, including Team President Tim Cindric, a crucial strategist for Newgarden.
Newgarden expressed his elation at securing the win and leaving the controversy behind. "Absolutely, they can say what they want, I don’t even care anymore," he declared.
Rain Delays and Rookie Challenges
The "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" almost didn't live up to its name, as heavy rain forced a four-hour delay, dashing NASCAR star Kyle Larson's dream of achieving the "Double" by racing in both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The delay ultimately made him miss the start of the latter race.
Despite a strong showing throughout most of the Indy 500, two rookie mistakes relegated Larson to an 18th-place finish.
The podium positions were filled out by Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing (3rd) and Alexander Rossi, O'Ward's teammate at Arrow McLaren Racing (4th). Chevrolet dominated the top rankings, claiming three out of the top four spots.
