India’s Modi could win third term, Polls predict

Exit Polls Suggest Third Consecutive Term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Exit polls indicate that India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to secure a third consecutive term in office.

However, analysts caution that these polls, provided by various news agencies, have often been inaccurate in the past and lack impartiality.

BJP Emerges as Frontrunner Amid Heated Campaign

Despite this, the polls have positioned Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the frontrunner in the general election.

The BJP, the main opposition Congress party, and regional competitors engaged in a heated campaign over seven phases of polling.

Official Results Awaited: BJP-led Coalition Expected to Cross Threshold

The official results will be announced on June 4. A party or coalition needs 272 seats in parliament to form a government.

According to the exit polls, the BJP-led coalition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is expected to surpass this threshold, potentially securing nearly two-thirds of the seats.

In his initial remarks after the conclusion of voting, Modi declared victory without mentioning the exit polls. "I can say with confidence that the people of India have voted in record numbers to re-elect the NDA government," he wrote on X, though he did not provide evidence for his claim.

What are the exit polls saying?

Prime Minister Modi entered this election with strong popularity, but his main competitor, Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress, along with a coalition of opposition parties, gained significant momentum during the extensive campaign period.

Despite this, an aggregate of six exit polls now anticipates substantial victories for the BJP-led NDA, although such surveys are not always reliable.

While the specific numbers vary, they forecast that the NDA could secure between 355 and 380 seats.

Reuters reports that the INDIA bloc is projected to gain between 125 and 165 seats. Individually, the BJP may win approximately 327 seats, falling short of its 370-seat target.

A really big election

Conducting a nationwide election in India, the world's most populous country with 1.4 billion people, is an enormous undertaking.

Nearly 969 million citizens were eligible to vote, a number equivalent to the combined populations of the US, Russia, Japan, Britain, Brazil, France, and Belgium.
