In addition to driving Vietnam’s rapid economic growth, the 80-year-old was recognized for his vigorous “blazing furnaces” anti-corruption campaign.

Political Turbulence Amidst Nguyen Phu Trong’s Death

Mr. Trong’s death occurs amid political turbulence within Vietnam’s Communist leadership. Recently, three top leaders resigned following unspecified accusations of misconduct.

According to an official statement released on Friday, Mr. Trong passed away "due to old age and serious illness."

Health Issues and Legacy of Nguyen Phu Trong

The Vietnamese government has announced that Mr. Trong is stepping down to focus on medical treatment for an undisclosed condition. President To Lam will take over Mr. Trong's duties, including managing the party’s central committee, politburo, and secretariat.

On the same day, Mr. Trong was awarded the Gold Star, Vietnam's highest honor, for his contributions.

His recent absence from public events, including the launch of a book of his speeches, followed a state visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin in late June.
