The Detroit Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention shortly before their game concluded in a shootout on Tuesday.
Although David Perron scored a dramatic goal to tie the game with just 3.3 seconds left in regulation, and Patrick Kane clinched a 5-4 win against the Montreal Canadiens with a shootout goal, the victory was inconsequential.
This was due to the Washington Capitals securing a playoff spot by winning their game and holding a tiebreaker advantage over the Red Wings with more regulation wins (32-27). This marks the eighth consecutive year that the Red Wings have not made the playoffs.
