From Sheriff to Congressman
Robinson's fame translated into political success. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1984 as a Democrat, but later switched parties, becoming a Republican in 1989.
He served three terms in Congress, even joining the "boll weevil" Democrats who supported some of President Reagan's policies.
However, Robinson's political ambitions were thwarted when he lost the Republican gubernatorial primary in 1990.

Robinson's final attempt at a political comeback came in 2002, when he ran for Congress again but was defeated.
