Trump vs Biden presidential debate

As the US election season intensifies, President Joe Biden and his rival Donald Trump are gearing up for their first debate, scheduled to take place on CNN.

Both candidates are expected to officially become their parties' nominees for the 2024 election later this summer.

The debate, set for Thursday, marks the beginning of a series of at least two debates leading up to the November 5th election.

Don't miss the upcoming presidential debate featuring the two main party nominees! The debate kicks off at 9:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (which is 1:00 am Greenwich Mean Time) on Thursday, June 27th.

It will be broadcast live on CNN from Atlanta, Georgia and will also be available on CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Max, and the CNN website. Be sure to follow the BBC's live blog for coverage and analysis throughout the event.

What are the rules?

Veteran CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will serve as moderators for the 90-minute debate, which will include two commercial breaks.

The podium placement and order of closing statements were determined by a coin toss, with President Biden choosing tails and opting for the right side of the screen, with Trump on his left.

Despite initial reports, Biden's campaign clarified he did not request a seat, and campaign staff are prohibited from interacting with either candidate during breaks. Each candidate will have a pen, pad of paper, and water bottle, but no props or pre-written notes.

Microphones will be muted when not in use, and there will be no studio audience to maintain timing and ensure a civil discussion.

Isn’t it a bit early for Trump vs Biden debate?

1. This is the earliest televised US general election debate since 1960, breaking from the tradition of the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which has organized debates since the late 1980s.

2. Looking back to the 2020 election cycle, Joe Biden and Donald Trump engaged in two televised debates known for their contentious tone. Despite criticisms, a rematch between the 81-year-old incumbent and his 78-year-old rival seemed inevitable, reflecting public sentiment.

3. After weeks of hesitation from both candidates, Joe Biden issued a challenge in May, signaling the start of their debate preparations.

4. Simultaneously, the Biden campaign criticized the CPD for orchestrating debates seen as more theatrical than substantive, and for scheduling debates late in the cycle, disenfranchising early voters.

5. Responding to Biden's challenge, Donald Trump agreed to participate in two debates: one on CNN and another on ABC News in September, following ground rules largely set by the Biden campaign.

6. While Trump's campaign sought additional debates with live audiences, Biden's team has so far declined. The upcoming debate will be the first time either candidate has debated in four years.
