Park rangers responded to reports of an armed individual making threats in Canyon Village, located south of Tower Falls in the park's central area.
Gunfire Erupts During Ranger Intervention in Yellowstone Park Shooting
When Yellowstone rangers approached the suspect, a shootout ensued. The armed individual was killed during the exchange. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
A park ranger was also injured during the Yellowstone Park shooting. The ranger's name has not been disclosed, but they are currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
Ongoing Investigation at Canyon Village After Yellowstone Park Shooting
The FBI is leading the investigation with assistance from National Park Service special agents. The area around the Canyon Lodge complex remains closed as part of the investigation.
Park officials emphasized that there is no longer a threat to the public. No further details have been released at this time.
Witness Describes Hearing Gunshots During Yellowstone Park Shooting
Tourist Todd Heskett, who was staying at Canyon Village with his family, told NBC News that he heard gunshots near the Canyon Lodge cafeteria around 8:00 am local time.
He immediately contacted emergency services and the hotel front desk, where he was informed about an active shooter situation and advised to stay in his room.
Heskett added that the Canyon Lodge cafeteria, visitor center, and general store were all closed during the incident. Approximately an hour later, Heskett received an emergency alert on his phone indicating that the situation was under control and it was safe to leave his room.
