Fatalities and Injuries Reported
Keli Cain, the public affairs director for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, disclosed that two of the fatalities occurred in Holdenville and another near Marietta on Interstate 35.
Governor Kevin Stitt, in a press briefing on Sunday, announced that another death occurred in the severely hit town of Sulphur in Murray County. He described the destruction in Sulphur as the worst he has seen during his tenure, noting that the town seemed to have every business destroyed.
Emergency Responses and Warnings
Following the Oklahoma tornado events, Governor Stitt declared an emergency disaster and has planned tours of the affected areas including Sulphur and Holdenville.
The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has reported significant injuries, property damage, flooding, and disruptions caused by downed power lines and trees.
Notably, the National Weather Service in Norman had to issue an urgent warning for a large and dangerous tornado moving north at 35 mph south of Sulphur, calling for immediate action from first responders.
Storm Threats and Safety Measures
The Storm Prediction Center has escalated the storm threat to a level 3 of 5 for Sunday, spanning from eastern Texas to southern Missouri, with cities like Shreveport, Little Rock, and Springfield particularly at risk. Residents across the affected regions have been placed under tornado watches, with over 4 million people on alert Sunday evening.
Flooding and Continuing Weather Challenges
In addition to the Oklahoma tornado threat, heavy rainfall has led to flash flood emergencies, particularly noted in Trinity County, Texas where up to 10 inches of rain was recorded by Sunday night.
The National Weather Service in Houston has highlighted the extremely dangerous and life-threatening nature of the situation as emergency crews conduct swift water rescues.
