Kim Ki Nam: Architect of North Korea’s Personality Cult
Kim Ki Nam played a crucial role in shaping North Korea's propaganda apparatus. He fostered a strong cult of personality around the ruling Kim dynasty, earning him comparisons to Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister.
Despite sharing the same surname, Kim Ki Nam had no familial ties to the Kim dynasty.
Rise Through the Ranks: From Deputy Director to Media Control
Kim Ki Nam's career began in 1966 when he was appointed deputy director of Pyongyang's Propaganda and Agitation Department. He rose through the ranks, eventually leading the department and exerting significant influence over North Korea's messaging.
Reports suggest a close bond with Kim Jong Il, even being referred to as "drinking buddies" in some media accounts. During the 1970s, he took control of the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper and played a key role in solidifying the leadership of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.
Tightening the Grip: Censorship and Control
Under Kim Ki Nam's watch, the propaganda department strictly controlled communication and information within North Korea.
South Korean and Western entertainment were heavily restricted, with public sentencing for offenses like watching K-dramas.
State television went as far as censoring the trousers of a British presenter deemed emblematic of Western influence.
A Rare Visit South and the Rise of Kim Jong Un
Kim Ki Nam was a rare North Korean official to visit South Korea, leading a delegation to the funeral of former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung in 2009.
After Kim Jong Il's death in 2011, the propaganda machine went into overdrive, swiftly propelling his young son, Kim Jong Un, into leadership.
State media portrayed Kim Ki Nam, then in his eighties, as a staunch supporter of Kim Jong Un.
Stepping Down and Enduring Legacy
Kim Ki Nam retired in the late 2010s, handing over the reins to Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister. Despite retirement, he continued to hold respect within the regime, evident from his public appearances. Analysts believe Kim Jong Un retained trust in Kim Ki Nam for his experience.
The Rodong Sinmun dedicated its entire front page to his passing, showcasing the respect he commanded. Experts see Kim Ki Nam's death as a potential turning point, marking the end of an era in North Korean propaganda.
