On Thursday, March 14, people across the United States commemorate National Pi Day, recognizing the mathematical constant that signifies the relationship between a circle's circumference and its diameter.

The symbol for this number is π, originating from the Greek word "perimetros," meaning “circumference,” as explained by PiDay.org.

Pi, often rounded to 3.14, is infinite in its decimal expansion. Guinness World Records notes the most precise calculation of Pi to be over 62 trillion digits (62,831,853,071,796 to be exact), achieved by the University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland in August 2021.

Beyond its mathematical significance, Pi Day is an opportunity to indulge in deals and discounts on pies, pizzas, and other treats. USA TODAY provides a guide to finding sweet savings on what may be considered the nerdiest celebration nationwide.

When is Pi Day?

You don't need to be a math or science expert to join in the festivities of National Pi Day. The inaugural Pi Day on March 14, 1988, at the Exploratorium in San Francisco was spearheaded by former physicist Larry Shaw and featured fruit pies and tea.

Since then, celebrations have expanded, especially after the House of Representatives passed a resolution in 2009 designating March 14 as National Pi Day. Nowadays, the festivities include a wide array of pies and pizzas. Here are some deals to help you celebrate National Pi Day.
