In an unexpected turn of events, Emma Stone walked away with the Best Actress trophy for her role in Poor Things, which also scored victories in three craft categories: Best Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Stone's win came as a surprise, especially considering she trumped the perceived frontrunner Lily Gladstone, who had been raking in awards for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph clinched the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in The Holdovers.
Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki’s film The Boy and the Heron was honored as the Best Animated Feature, while Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest took home the Oscar 2024 for Best International Feature. The documentary 20 Days in Mariupol snagged the award for Best Documentary.
Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell received the Oscar 2024 for Best Original Song for their track “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie.
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari were recognized with the award for Best Original Screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, while Cord Jefferson won Best Adapted Screenplay for American Fiction.
Leading up to the ceremony, Oppenheimer led the pack in nominations for the 2024 Oscars, securing a total of 13 nods. Following closely were Poor Things with 11 nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10, and Barbie with eight.
The winners of the 96th annual Academy Awards were announced at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The event was broadcasted live on ABC, starting earlier than usual this year, and was viewed in over 200 territories worldwide. Jimmy Kimmel returned as host for his fourth time.
(Additionally, on Sunday, a Free Palestine march, advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, caused traffic disruptions in Los Angeles ahead of the 2024 Oscars.)
