Escape Plot Leads to Shootings and Manhunt

On March 20th, chaos erupted at a Boise hospital as Idaho Department of Correction officers prepared to return Meade to prison following medical treatment. Prosecutors allege that Nicholas Umphenour, an accomplice, opened fire on the officers, injuring two.

A third officer was also injured in the confusion when another officer mistakenly identified him as the shooter. Thankfully, all officers survived the attack.

Meade and Umphenour then fled the scene, embarking on a journey that took them first to north-central Idaho before returning south. They were apprehended the following day.

Charges and Upcoming Hearings

Meade entered a guilty plea to the escape charge in the 4th District Court on Wednesday. However, he still faces potential sentencing enhancements due to the alleged involvement with injuring the officers. Sentencing for the escape charge is scheduled for July, and Meade could face life in prison.

Umphenour, meanwhile, is charged with three felonies: aggravated battery on law enforcement officers, using a firearm during a crime, and aiding and abetting escape. He has not yet entered a plea and will appear in court later this month.

Court documents indicate a hearing is scheduled for June 20th where Meade will address the felony enhancement charges related to the officers' injuries.

Unanswered Questions

Efforts to reach Meade's defense attorney were unsuccessful, and Umphenour's public defender could not be contacted. The motives behind the escape attempt and the nature of Meade's alleged involvement in injuring the officers remain unclear and will likely be addressed in the upcoming hearings.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by corrections officers and the lengths some inmates may go to in their pursuit of freedom.

As the legal proceedings unfold, more details will undoubtedly come to light regarding the events of that chaotic day in March.
